Iran Reopens Strait of Hormuz; Trump Confirms, Oil Prices Fall

Following a ceasefire in Lebanon, Iran has reopened the Strait of Hormuz to commercial shipping, a move confirmed by Donald Trump and met with a drop in oil prices.

Strait of Hormuz Reopened to All Vessels

According to a post on X, Aragczi stated that the passage for all commercial ships through the Strait of Hormuz is now fully open for the remainder of the ceasefire period, following a coordinated route announced by the Islamic Republic of Iran Ports and Maritime Organization.

Trump Confirms Reopening, Oil Prices Decline

Former U.S. President Donald Trump confirmed the reports in a post on Truth Social, stating, “Iran just announced that the Strait of Hormuz is fully open and ready for shipping. THANK YOU!” Following the announcement, oil prices fell by 10 percent.

Strategic Importance and Prior Blockade

The Strait of Hormuz is a crucial maritime route for the export of resources from the Persian Gulf region, normally carrying 20 percent of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas (LNG). Iran had effectively blocked the strait after a U.S. and Israeli attack on February 28th, allowing only select vessels to pass, which caused a rise in oil and gas prices.

On Monday, April 13th, the United States announced a blockade of Iranian ports to pressure Tehran into compliance.

An analysis by Maciej Czarnecki on wyborcza.pl highlights the evolving dynamics between Europe and the Trump administration, noting a shift from “Trump whisperers” among European leaders to more vocal critics of Washington, including Italian Prime Minister Georgia Meloni.

U.S. Economic Pressure Campaign on Iran

The U.S. Treasury Department implemented “Economic Fury” to increase economic pressure on Iran, announcing further sanctions on Iran-linked entities on Wednesday. U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth stated that Tehran should choose wisely and reach an agreement, warning of potential military action if they do not.

U.S. Port Blockade Remains in Place

Despite the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, Trump announced that the U.S. blockade of Iranian ports will remain in effect. He stated that the naval blockade will fully apply to Iran until their deal is 100% finalized, anticipating a swift resolution as most points are already negotiated.
