Iran Reverses Course, Vance Heads to Islamabad Amid White House Wait

U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance is scheduled to travel to Islamabad Tuesday to discuss a potential agreement with Iranian negotiators, following a signal from Tehran.

US-Iran Negotiations

Three American sources speaking to Axios report that U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance will travel to Islamabad on Tuesday morning, April 21st, to discuss a potential agreement with Iranian negotiators. Jared Kushner, Donald Trump’s son-in-law, and Steve Witkoff, the U.S. Special Envoy for the Middle East, may accompany Vance.

Tehran’s Shift and Mediation Efforts

Axios reported that the White House spent Monday awaiting a signal from Tehran regarding the dispatch of its negotiating team to Islamabad. The green light for talks reportedly came from the Supreme Leader Monday evening. Mediators from Pakistan, Egypt, and Turkey have urged Tehran to attend the meeting.

Trump’s Approach to Iran

According to reports, Iranian delays in initiating talks stemmed from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps’ demand for the lifting of the American blockade of Iranian ports. However, Trump reportedly prefers a reversal of this order, stating that a blockade not lifted until an agreement is reached “totally destroys Iran.”

Threat of Strait of Hormuz Blockade

On April 12th, Donald Trump announced on Truth Social that the U.S. military would “begin process of blocking all ships attempting to enter or leave the Strait of Hormuz.” Days later, U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) announced the deployment of thousands of American soldiers – including 5,000 sailors and Marines – to intercept vessels heading to or from Iranian ports.

Ceasefire Deadline Looms

The potential visit by the U.S. Vice President to Pakistan is set to occur just before the expiration of a two-week ceasefire with Iran, declared on the night of April 7th-8th. On Monday, Donald Trump dismissed claims that he was under pressure to reach an agreement as “false.”

Trump’s Stance on a Deal

“I am not under pressure, although everything will happen relatively quickly! Time is not my enemy, it only matters that we finally, after 47 years, clean up this mess,” Trump wrote Monday. He also assured that any agreement would guarantee peace, security, and protection “not only in Israel and the Middle East, but also in Europe, America and everywhere else.”
