Iran Suspends Talks With US Over Middle East Conflict

Iran has frozen negotiations with the United States, demanding an end to Israeli military operations in Gaza and Lebanon as a condition to resume diplomatic dialogue amid escalating regional hostilities.

Diplomatic Deadlock and Demands

An Iranian delegation conducting indirect talks with the U.S. through mediators has suspended negotiations. Tehran stated that discussions will not resume unless the “Zionist regime” halts operations in Gaza and Lebanon and fully withdraws from occupied Lebanese territories.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi asserted on X that the existing ceasefire between Iran and the U.S. must be interpreted as a truce across all fronts, including Lebanon.

Threats to Global Shipping Routes

Tehran and its “Axis of Resistance”—including the Houthis, Hezbollah, Hamas, and Iraqi militias—have reportedly agreed to block the Strait of Hormuz and open new fronts, including the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, to punish Israel. Reuters notes that Houthi participation in such retaliation would likely aim to block access to the Suez Canal.

Escalating Military Confrontation

Despite a formal ceasefire, military skirmishes continue. U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) reported intercepting two Iranian ballistic missiles targeting a U.S. base in Kuwait. Additionally, U.S. forces struck Iranian radar and drone control facilities in Garuk and on Qeshm Island in response to the downing of a U.S. MQ-1 drone.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has ordered strikes on Hezbollah-controlled southern suburbs of Beirut, rejecting any linkage between a truce with Iran and the cessation of attacks against Hezbollah. These tensions have pushed Brent crude prices up by approximately 5 percent and West Texas Intermediate by nearly 6 percent.

Casualties and Regional Instability

The conflict has resulted in over 3,300 deaths in Lebanon. On the Israeli side, 24 soldiers and four civilians have died, with tens of thousands of citizens evacuated from the north. Negotiations concerning a 60-day truce extension and shipping through the Strait of Hormuz remain in limbo following the failure to reach a final decision over the weekend.
