Investigation Opened After Death During Police Intervention in Płock

Prosecutors have launched an investigation into potential official misconduct and involuntary manslaughter following the death of a 46-year-old man who became aggressive during a police intervention in Płock on Saturday morning.

The Incident and Police Intervention

Police were called early Saturday morning to the area near a bus stop and a market on Czwartaków Street in Płock after reports of a naked, bleeding man running through the streets. Residents reported the man lying at a bus stop and shouting near a shop. Upon arrival, officers stated that the 46-year-old behaved irrationally and eventually turned aggressive.

According to the Płock police, the man’s behavior suggested he may have been under the influence of narcotics. Officers handcuffed the man behind his back and waited for an ambulance. During this time, he stopped breathing, prompting officers to remove the handcuffs and begin resuscitation attempts, which were continued by medical personnel, though the man could not be saved.

Legal Proceedings and Investigation

Bartosz Maliszewski, spokesperson for the District Prosecutor’s Office in Płock, announced that an investigation was opened on Monday. The case is being handled under Article 231 of the Penal Code regarding the abuse of power by public officials, in conjunction with Article 155, covering involuntary manslaughter.

Authorities have secured police body-worn camera footage and municipal surveillance recordings from two locations. An autopsy is being scheduled to determine the exact cause of death. While the victim’s apartment was searched and his sister identified the body, the officers involved in the intervention have not yet been questioned.

Evidence and Internal Oversight

During the search of the man’s apartment, investigators found various substances, including several grams of suspected marijuana and anabolic steroids, as well as tens of thousands of zlotys in cash. These items have been secured for laboratory and toxicological testing.

The Płock Municipal Police have initiated internal explanatory proceedings regarding the intervention. The case has also been reported to the Police Internal Affairs Bureau, the General Headquarters Control Bureau, and the Provincial Police Control Department in Radom. Prosecutors noted the deceased was previously known to law enforcement, including a prior homicide case for which he was serving a sentence until autumn 2025.
