Dmitrij Vasilchenkov has been identified as the perpetrator of the Kyiv shooting. The 58-year-old former military serviceman held both Russian and Ukrainian citizenship.
Vasilchenkov’s life spanned both Russia and Ukraine, residing in Bakhmut, Donetsk Oblast, then in Ryazan, Russia, before settling in Kyiv. He completed his military service in 2004, serving in the logistical battalion of the 254th Motorized Rifle Division.
Possible Russian Military Connections
Evidence suggests Vasilchenkov may have had deeper ties to Russian military structures. Photos have surfaced showing him in the uniform of a lieutenant colonel in the Russian Federation Army, alongside other officers.
He is believed to have been associated with a unit in Chebarkul, whose soldiers later participated in armed actions against Ukraine.
The Kyiv Shooting and Hostage Situation
The attack began in the Holosiiv district of Kyiv, where the assailant initially opened fire on people in the street, killing four. He then entered a supermarket, barricaded himself inside, and took hostages.
A fire broke out in his apartment concurrently, complicating the response efforts. During the siege, one hostage was shot and killed by the perpetrator, while four others were rescued. Special forces ultimately stormed the supermarket, killing Vasilchenkov.
Casualties and Aftermath
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported that the number of injured may increase as more individuals seek medical attention. Among the wounded is a 12-year-old boy.
Radical Views and Anti-Ukrainian Activity
Vasilchenkov expressed radical views online between 2016 and 2019, publishing anti-Ukrainian and antisemitic content on social media. He questioned the existence of the Ukrainian state and incited violence against specific social groups.
His posts referenced extremist ideologies and brutal methods of historical regimes, and he openly supported Russian actions in Donbas, criticizing their limited scope in 2014. This aspect is a key focus of the ongoing investigation.
Legal Weapon and Control System Questions
The attacker used a Kel-Tec SUB-2000 carbine chambered for pistol ammunition, legally registered as a hunting weapon. Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko confirmed Vasilchenkov extended his permit to use the weapon in December 2025, providing the required documentation, including a medical certificate.
An investigation is underway to verify if procedures were followed correctly, and to determine who issued the relevant documents and whether any negligence occurred.
Prior Legal Issues and Systemic Failures
In 2024, Vasilchenkov faced court proceedings for causing harm to another person. The case was resolved with a settlement, allowing him to avoid criminal liability. Questions are now being raised about whether his previous behavior was adequately assessed by state institutions.
