Polish MP Andrzej Shejna faces scrutiny over a luxury watch he allegedly failed to declare, with the Left party holding a disciplinary meeting on January 20.
Left Discusses Shejna’s Watch Case
According to Onet, the Polish Press Agency unofficially reported that the case of Andrzej Shejna’s watch was discussed at a meeting of the Left party club on Tuesday, January 20. One MP stated, “It was a disciplinary talk, Andrzej told us that it is a counterfeit.” Another PAP source emphasized that the real problem is how the politician explained the watch, adding, “We expect that he will provide an appropriate expertise, in which it will be written in black and white what kind of watch it is.”
Left parliamentarians also denied that Shejna faces suspension from the party.
What’s the Controversy?
A few days ago, Andrzej Shejna appeared on television in Poland24. When asked about the Omega watch on his wrist, the MP confirmed it was an Omega. However, when journalists pointed out that no such watch appeared in his asset declaration, Shejna suddenly changed his story, stating “it’s not Omega.” He added, “I have to check this watch, I’ll answer you.”
Later on TVP Info, Shejna claimed that “I never owned, I was not the owner of a watch whose value would exceed the value of 10 thousand zlotys.” According to regulations, MPs must declare items worth more than 10,000 zlotys in their asset declarations.
Will There Be Suspension?
According to media reports, Andrzej Shejna could face suspension from the party. On Thursday, January 22, Gazeta.pl spoke with a spokesperson for the New Left party. Łukasz Michnik stated, “MP Andrzej Shejna will soon give explanations, we’re waiting for them. From the information we have, it appears that no irregularity occurred and the MP does not own a watch worth more than 10 thousand zlotys. Nevertheless, I am waiting for detailed explanations.”
When asked about possible suspension, Michnik replied that it is too early to talk about this topic.
