Louisiana Shooting: Father Kills Seven Children, Police Say

Police in Shreveport, Louisiana, report that Shamar Elkins shot and killed seven of his children before being fatally shot by officers during a pursuit.

Police have identified Shamar Elkins as the father of the seven victims. Two women were hospitalized with serious injuries, and a teenager was also wounded but is not in life-threatening condition.

The shooting occurred Sunday, April 19th, at multiple locations in Shreveport. The suspect initially shot a woman on the street before proceeding to a nearby home where he allegedly killed the eight children. One victim managed to escape to a neighboring house and call the police.

Suspect Killed During Escape

The suspect fled the scene in a stolen vehicle and was shot and killed by police during a chase. Authorities state that the suspect acted alone and are currently investigating the motive for the shooting.

Initial reports suggest a domestic dispute may have been the cause of the shooting.

Reactions from Local Officials

Shreveport Police Chief Wayne Smith stated he could not imagine how such an event could occur, and assured the public that investigators would analyze all evidence at the crime scene.

Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry and his wife Sharon expressed their grief and offered prayers for those affected. They also expressed gratitude for the work of law enforcement and first responders.

Shreveport Mayor Tom Arceneau described the shooting as a tragedy that has impacted the entire community, possibly the most tragic event in Shreveport’s history. The White House is also monitoring the situation.
