On Tuesday, November 4, Mexico City’s President Claudia Sheinbaum was assaulted by a man who grabbed her breasts and attempted a kiss.
Incident at a Public Speech
On Tuesday, November 4, a man broke into the crowd at President Claudia Sheinbaum’s address in Mexico City and began assaulting her. According to CNN, he grabbed her breasts and tried to kiss her. Sheinbaum said she could taste alcohol in the attacker and described him as “completely drunk.”
Arrest and Investigation
The man was arrested and is currently in custody. Officials linked him to alleged molestation of two other women on the same day.
Legal Action and Public Statement
Sheinbaum filed a criminal complaint on Wednesday, saying she intends to pursue legal action. “I decided to file the complaint because I experienced this as a woman—a plight that all women in our country face,” she said. “No man has the right to violate that space.”
Past Experiences of Harassment
She added that this was not her first assault. At 12, she was harassed on public transport, and later a lecturer abused her. She was elected president in June last year, becoming the first woman to hold the post.
Sexual Violence Statistics and Support Resources
Sexual violence is any unwanted sexual contact. UNICEF data show that globally about 15 million adolescents aged 15‑19 have experienced such violence, yet only 1 percent of girls seek help from a professional. Research indicates that 80 percent of victims develop post‑traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Victims can call the 24‑hour “Blue Line” helpline at 22 668 70 00 or the Women’s Rights Center emergency line at 600 070 717 for support.
