50-Metre Mast Collapses Onto Hiking Trail; Investigators Suspect Sabotage

A 50-metre telecommunications tower collapsed onto the Edmund Massalski hiking trail near Krajno on Sunday, June 14, prompting a police investigation into whether the bolts were deliberately loosened by third parties.

Investigation into Potential Sabotage

The metal structure fell on Sunday afternoon in a popular area frequently used by both locals and tourists. While police initially considered weather conditions, investigators are now increasingly focused on human interference as the primary cause of the collapse.

Senior Aspirant Jacek Borek of the Kielce Municipal Police stated that officials have performed necessary investigative activities, including questioning local residents to determine the exact circumstances of the incident.

Evidence of Human Interference

Grzegorz Skiba, a local councillor and the first official on the scene, confirmed that bolts had been removed from the base of the mast. Photographic evidence and onsite observations by company staff suggest that the structure was compromised intentionally.

In a social media statement, Skiba emphasized that if the intentional removal of bolts is confirmed, the incident would qualify as a severe act of vandalism posing a direct threat to public safety. He noted that it was a miracle no hikers were present at the exact moment of the collapse.

Legal Consequences and Financial Impact

Police have warned that if third-party involvement is confirmed, those responsible could face up to eight years in prison. The destroyed structure served as a telecommunications mast for a mobile network operator.

While the investigation continues, unofficial estimates suggest that the financial losses resulting from the destruction of the mast may reach as much as 1.5 million PLN.
