Court Rejects Attempt to Revoke European Arrest Warrant for Marcin Romanowski

The Warsaw District Court has officially denied a defense motion to revoke the European Arrest Warrant issued for former Deputy Justice Minister Marcin Romanowski, who remains a key figure in the Justice Fund investigation.

Status of the Investigation

Marcin Romanowski, a former deputy minister under the PiS government and current MP, faces formal charges related to irregularities within the Justice Fund. In December 2024, reports emerged regarding protection granted to him by the Hungarian government of Viktor Orban, leading to the issuance of a European Arrest Warrant (EAW) in February.

While current Hungarian Prime Minister Peter Magyar has stated that Hungary will not serve as a haven for international criminals, Romanowski’s whereabouts remain uncertain. After vacating his residence in Budapest in late May, he was reportedly sighted in both Serbia and Croatia.

Legal Efforts to Nullify the EAW

In June, media reports indicated that the defense team sought to overturn the EAW, arguing that Romanowski was residing in Serbia—a jurisdiction where such warrants do not apply. Prosecutor General Waldemar Zurek has held high-level discussions with his counterparts in Serbia and Croatia regarding the suspect’s location, though neither country has confirmed his presence.

Judge Anna Ptaszek confirmed in an official statement that on July 10, 2026, the Warsaw District Court officially denied the motion filed by Romanowski’s counsel to revoke the active European Arrest Warrant.

Parallel Proceedings Involving Zbigniew Ziobro

The court continues to process separate legal matters concerning former Justice Minister Zbigniew Ziobro. On July 1, the Warsaw District Court upheld a temporary arrest warrant for the politician, rejecting appeals from his defense.

Judge Ptaszek indicated on Thursday that the court is expected to initiate further procedural actions regarding the potential issuance of an EAW for Ziobro in the near future.
