Disciplinary Motion Filed After Confrontation
KO MP Maria Janyska, chair of the parliamentary Committee on Administration and Internal Affairs, confirmed she is seeking formal disciplinary action against Law and Justice (PiS) leader Jarosław Kaczyński. She stated that his verbal attacks on law enforcement during the July 10 Smoleńsk monthly event cannot go unanswered.
The conflict arose when police prevented Kaczyński and other PiS politicians from reaching the monument to Lech Kaczyński, forcing them to lay wreaths at a distance. Kaczyński accused the police of inaction regarding protesters and labeled the officers as “militias of the ruling party.”
Kaczyński’s Call for a Citizens’ Guard
Criticizing the current state of law enforcement, Kaczyński suggested that the police force requires a complete reconstruction. He proposed the future formation of a “citizens’ guard” to ensure that officers fulfill their duties impartially, arguing that current services have failed to protect political figures.
Government and Ministry Condemnation
Prime Minister Donald Tusk described Kaczyński’s rhetoric as “unwise and unacceptable,” accusing the opposition leader of systematically attacking state services for political gain. Tusk remarked that such behavior reflects a lack of maturity and a disregard for national stability.
Interior Minister Marcin Kierwiński labeled the comments “scandalous,” asserting that the era of politicians standing above the law has ended. The ministry issued a formal statement condemning the comparison of police to “militias” as a direct assault on the authority of state institutions and a source of social instability.
Police Defense of Institutional Neutrality
The National Police Headquarters issued an official response emphasizing that neutrality is a foundation of their service. The statement clarified that police actions are strictly bound by law and that officers swear an oath to the nation rather than to individual politicians, rejecting attempts to use the force as a tool for political combat.
