Lubliniec Prosecutor Faces Dismissal Over Release of Drunk Driver

The Deputy District Prosecutor in Lubliniec will lose his position after failing to request the detention of an intoxicated, unlicensed driver who caused a collision on the A1 motorway.

Accountability for the Lubliniec Incident

Prosecutor General Waldemar Żurek has initiated the removal of the Deputy District Prosecutor in Lubliniec following the controversial release of a driver who had caused a collision while intoxicated. The official’s dismissal stems from a failure in supervisory duties over prosecutors on duty during the incident.

The case has now been transferred to the Regional Prosecutor’s Office in Częstochowa. Additionally, a formal disciplinary proceeding has been launched to evaluate the conduct of the prosecutor who initially consulted with police and authorized the driver’s release.

Details of the A1 Motorway Collision

On July 18, journalists from TVN24 performed a citizen’s arrest of a 37-year-old man on the A1 motorway between Pyrzowice and Woźniki. The driver had been swerving across lanes before striking a truck and attempting to swap seats with his passenger.

Upon arrival, police confirmed the suspect had a blood alcohol level of 2.7 promille. Furthermore, the man held two active judicial driving bans and had previously had his license revoked by the Pabianice district official. Despite these facts, the prosecutor on duty ordered his release once his police detention period concluded.

Supervision of Traffic Offenses

Prosecutor General Waldemar Żurek has ordered the National Prosecutor, Dariusz Korneluk, to monitor the ongoing investigation to ensure it aligns with legal standards. This case will now strictly follow the guidelines established by the Prosecutor General regarding the handling of dangerous road offenders.
