Breakthrough on US Base in Poland: Pentagon Sets Up Working Team

Polish Deputy Defense Minister says the US Department of Defense has formed a team to work on establishing a permanent American military base in Poland.

Government Steps and Washington Talks

Today I very specifically presented what steps the Polish government has already taken, including a specific Council of Ministers resolution and a draft bill to fund this base, said the deputy minister. She assured that this report was very well received in Washington and expressed hope that it will yield good results.

Regarding the bases, what I can announce is that a team has already been formed on the American side working on creating such a base, and the Polish Ministry of National Defense also has such a team operating, so a specific step is behind us, the deputy minister noted.

She stated that the U.S. team is already working and is connected to the Department of Defense, with Deputy Pentagon Chief Elbridge Colby responsible for the project.

Sobkowiak-Czarnecka emphasized that the final decision rests with President Donald Trump, while noting that Poland’s task is to prepare everything so that the decision is favorable.

Defense Ministry Progress and Formal Process

In June, Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz reported receiving a positive response from Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth to a May 29 letter expressing Poland’s readiness to host a permanent U.S. military base, noting the Department of War is open to the offer.

On June 28, he announced that following the positive response from the US Secretary of Defense, the two countries are at the next stage of talks as a force review is underway in the Pentagon.

The Defense Minister emphasized that the process is highly formalized, involving the designation of a potential location and securing funding, with a large share of the costs falling on the Polish side.

The prime minister participated in a meeting of the National Security Council committee, presenting various options and receiving a green light to organize financing and deterrence potential, he stated during a press conference in Warsaw.

Potential Locations and Current US Presence

Asked about potential locations for the permanent base, Kosiniak-Kamysz pointed to Poznań and Wrocław as places currently rated very highly by the American side, highlighting the U.S. Army V Corps Forward Headquarters in Poznań.

Regarding Wrocław, he noted ongoing airport reconstruction alongside the handover of a new Polish-American railway transport reloading base for U.S. forces in Świętoszów, Lower Silesia.

Poland currently hosts approximately 10,000 U.S. soldiers on a rotational and permanent basis, with key elements including the V Corps Forward Headquarters at Camp Kościuszko and the U.S. Army Garrison in Poznań providing administrative and logistical support.
