This is the final end to weeks of tension inside Law and Justice. Chairman Jarosław Kaczyński officially announced that thirty-odd MPs are resigning from membership in the grouping. The reason is the revolt around the “Rozwój Plus” association, headed by former Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki. At midnight on Thursday, the ultimatum set by the party authorities expired. “It is, you could say, in a sense over,” the PiS leader briefly commented.

In a Friday statement, PiS Chairman Jarosław Kaczyński caused a true political avalanche. The formation’s leader conveyed that about thirty-odd MPs resigned from membership in Law and Justice. The direct cause of the mass departure is the refusal to sign a statement on non-membership in external organizations and associations.

The final deadline to submit the appropriate declarations expired on Thursday at midnight. The matter primarily concerns politicians gathered around the “Rozwój Plus” association, founded by former head of government Mateusz Morawiecki. The PiS leadership considered the lack of signatures under the declarations as an unequivocal resignation from representing the colors of the previous party faction.

As the Chairman of Law and Justice emphasized, the sharp reaction of the formation’s authorities was not accidental and was linked to a deeper political conflict. Kaczyński revealed that signing the statements was supposed to be a simple loyalty test and a signal that parliamentarians were not taking part in a process aimed at dividing the grouping.

– Above all, it is about a proposal that was made many weeks ago, to divide our party – explained the PiS leader. As he added, this proposal came from a person “credible, very important in the party” and was repeated during at least three long meetings. Two of these conversations took place tete-a-tete, while the third was attended by party activists and outsiders.

In Jarosław Kaczyński’s assessment, the establishment of the association by Mateusz Morawiecki directly fit into this scenario: – In this situation, we could not look at the association in any other way than as an element of precisely this plan, the plan to divide the party – he pointed out.

Recent Conciliatory Gestures and Lack of Acceptance. “Conclusions Must Be Drawn”

Jarosław Kaczyński noted that before Thursday’s ultimatum deadline expired, the PiS leadership showed a will to compromise and proposed far-reaching concessions to the rebels. – We abandoned the demand to dissolve this association. It was only about its activity being frozen until the elections. That was also not accepted – informed the PiS chairman.

The head of the grouping also referred to the explanations of the MPs who decided not to submit to the commands of the party authorities. He assured that the rules of the game were clear from the beginning and known to every member of the club. – Every parliamentarian knew what signing and what disagreeing to sign the statement is. Various strange and sometimes funny explanations change nothing here – he added firmly.

What’s Next for Morawiecki’s MPs? Political Committee to Meet on Tuesday

The decision of the parliamentarians means the inevitable completion of the formal procedure. Jarosław Kaczyński announced that a meeting of the PiS Political Committee has been convened for next Tuesday.

– The Political Committee will simply take this fact into knowledge. It is, you could say, in a sense over. A certain formality still has to be done because we respect the statute – summarized the PiS chairman.

The departure of over thirty MPs is one of the biggest internal crises in the history of Law and Justice. The decisions that will be made on Tuesday will finally seal the new balance of power on the Polish parliamentary scene.
