Arrest of a Suspected Arsonist
In a statement, the gendarmerie reported that a 32-year-old suspect may have been responsible for several fires in the communes of Brignoles, Cabasse, and Vins-sur-Caramy that broke out between July 19 and July 24. Officers stated that this led to the destruction of several hundred hectares of vegetation and forests.
Officers detained the man on Saturday, July 25. That same day, the prosecutor’s office charged the 32-year-old with burning forests, vegetation, and crops, resulting in irreversible damage to the natural environment. The arrested man will be further examined by experts.
Unprecedented Scale of Fires and Detentions
France is battling numerous wildfires, mainly in the southern part of the country. French authorities noted that their scale is unprecedented. Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu reported in recent days that there have been 162 arrests in arson cases since July 6.
Mass Evacuations Across the Country
French broadcaster BFM reported that due to the fires, the evacuation of populations threatened by the elements continued on Tuesday morning, July 28. Over 250,000 people have already been evacuated nationwide due to the fires, with about 220,000 of them in Gironde.
As previously reported, Renaud Gaudeul, the prosecutor in Bordeaux, stated earlier that the fire in Gironde likely started accidentally through the use of a brushcutter by workers clearing an area near a high-voltage power line. According to preliminary findings, applicable work regulations were not violated.
Casualty Among Firefighters
During the fight against raging forest and meadow fires in southeastern France on Monday, July 27, a 38-year-old firefighter died. His death was reported by BFM television, citing the fire department authorities of the Bouches-du-Rhone department, specifying that the deceased firefighter served at the fire and rescue center in Saint-Etienne-du-Gres.
