Trump and Zelensky Meet at the White House as Patriot Systems Take Priority

Oval Office Meeting and Israeli PM Arrival

In the Oval Office, US President Donald Trump is hosting his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky. The talks were scheduled to begin at 9:30 Washington time (15:30 in Poland), but the Ukrainian leader arrived at the White House with an approximately 20-minute delay.

Dozens of minutes later, at 11:00 (17:00 Polish time), Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu arrived at the White House. Both leaders—Ukrainian and Israeli—will attend the funeral of the late Republican Senator Lindsey Graham, who was known for his firm support of Kyiv.

The White House meeting is scheduled to be brief and closed to the media. Following talks with Trump, Zelensky will head to the Capitol to meet with all one hundred senators.

Positive Assessment and Production of Patriot Missiles

After the leaders’ conversation, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stated that Trump’s meetings with Zelensky and Netanyahu were positive and productive. In turn, Zelensky reported after the talks that one of the topics raised was the production of missiles for Patriot systems, assessing that it was a good meeting.

As a Ukrainian source told Reuters, the priority of the talks in Washington is to obtain the Trump administration’s approval to purchase missiles for Patriot batteries. This is Trump’s second meeting with Zelensky this month; they previously spoke during the NATO summit in Ankara, where Trump announced that the US would agree to the production of Patriot systems by Ukraine under license.

Arrival in Washington and Strategic Cooperation

Zelensky flew to Washington on Monday evening. As he wrote on the platform X, Ukraine’s priority is ballistic missile defense and strategic cooperation with the United States, adding that peace must be brought closer.

Global Deficit of Patriot Systems

The talks took place in the shadow of Wall Street Journal reports stating that the United States halted a large-scale military operation against Iran precisely out of fear of further depleting stocks of Patriot interceptors and other air defense systems. The deficit of these systems is felt globally, as the consumption of Patriot PAC-3 interceptors in Ukraine and the Middle East has for months outpaced the production capacities of the defense industry.

The WSJ reports that Trump privately said he is impressed by Ukraine’s effective use of drones, as Kyiv defends itself against Iranian Shahed kamikaze drones, repelling attacks similar to those currently faced by the US military in the Middle East.
