Fugitive Polish Politician Romanowski Seeks Safe Passage from Transnistria

Wanted former Deputy Justice Minister Marcin Romanowski has requested a safe conduct letter from the Warsaw Regional Court while reportedly residing in the unrecognized breakaway region of Transnistria.

Request for Safe Conduct Sent to Warsaw Court

According to unofficial findings by RMF FM, Marcin Romanowski, who is wanted in connection with the Justice Fund scandal, sent correspondence from abroad to the Regional Court in Warsaw. In the document, which was registered last week and personally signed by the suspect, the former deputy justice minister requested the issuance of a so-called letter of safe conduct. The Law and Justice politician commits to appearing personally before Polish law enforcement authorities in the document, but conditions this on receiving a guarantee that he can stand trial from a free footing.

Correspondence Dispatched from the Capital of Transnistria

Attention is drawn to the address from which the letter was sent. According to RMF FM information, the correspondence originates from Tiraspol. This is the capital of Transnistria, an internationally unrecognized, separatist republic which is de jure a region of Moldova and remains under strong Russian influence.

Key Figure in the Justice Fund Investigation

Marcin Romanowski, who previously served as deputy justice minister, is one of the key figures alongside Zbigniew Ziobro in the investigation concerning irregularities in the expenditure of Justice Fund resources. The politician has been avoiding Polish law enforcement authorities for a year and a half while staying abroad. Before moving to pro-Russian Transnistria, he was hiding in Hungary.
