Over 1.5 Million Pensioners Use mLegitymacja in Their Phones
More than 1.5 million pensioners and disability beneficiaries already use this digital document in their phones, but many do not realize the possibilities it offers. It is not only confirmation of benefit entitlements and discounts. Since July, its appearance has changed, prompting questions about the validity of previous cards. There is also an important detail regarding the use of the document that seniors should remember.
The pensioner’s mLegitymacja is increasingly replacing the traditional card, utilized by over 1.5 million people. The digital document is located in the free mObywatel application and can be kept at hand alongside other documents available on the phone.
Equal Legal Force to Traditional Cards
The mLegitymacja is not merely electronic information about receiving a benefit. It has the same legal power as the plastic pensioner card and can be used in situations where a traditional document may be presented. Seniors can possess both documents and use whichever is more convenient at any given moment.
What Discounts Does the Pensioner mLegitymacja Offer?
The primary function of the document is to confirm that its holder is a pensioner or disability beneficiary with specific entitlements. On this basis, holders can utilize various reliefs and discounts regarding transport, municipal services, cultural events, or selected healthcare services. However, there is no single, identical list of all discounts across Poland, as the scope varies depending on the local government, enterprise, event organizer, or specific institution.
How to Add the Pensioner mLegitymacja in the mObywatel App
One of the greatest advantages of the digital document is how it is obtained. There is no need to submit an application or visit ZUS. Users simply need the mObywatel application and mobile document access. To add the mLegitymacja, users without an existing digital ID in the app must first confirm their identity and add the mObywatel document before adding the pensioner ID.
Who Is Eligible for the Digital Pensioner ID
The digital document is available to individuals with established rights to retirement pensions, social pensions, bridge pensions, or teacher compensation benefits. This applies to both prior beneficiaries and those whose rights were established by ZUS decisions from January 2023 onward. Certain minors with ZUS entitlements, such as family pensions, can also use it, with individuals 13 and older able to add the document using a school mLegitymacja, while other users require a valid Polish ID card and a trusted profile or e-ID.
Physical Cards Remain Valid Alongside Digital IDs
The appearance of the document on the phone does not end the validity of plastic cards. Individuals with previously issued traditional cards can continue to use them for their validity period while simultaneously using the mLegitymacja, meaning seniors do not have to choose between physical and digital versions. Since January 2023, plastic cards are issued upon request by the interested party, their legal representative, or proxy.
Updated Design Implemented on July 13, 2026
Starting July 13, 2026, the mLegitymacja features a refreshed design with the removal of information regarding the ZUS branch that issued the document. This change does not require holders of traditional cards to replace them, as old plastic cards remain valid for the period indicated on them without requiring additional applications or visits to ZUS offices.
Verification Methods Using QR Codes
Displaying the document is straightforward after launching the app, logging in with a password or biometrics and a PIN, and selecting the pensioner ID. Data and the last update date can be shown directly, or users can select “Transfer” to generate a QR code that allows another party to verify specific details, including first name, last name, low-resolution photo, and ID number.
Limitations Regarding National Identity Cards
Although the mLegitymacja shares the legal power of traditional cards, it does not replace an ID card in every situation. If regulations require presenting an ID card alongside the pensioner ID, both documents must be shown when using the electronic version. Furthermore, individuals relying solely on a passport or residence card without a valid Polish ID card cannot use mobile documents in mObywatel.
Troubleshooting Missing Documents and App Versions
If the pensioner ID is missing upon opening the app, users should check the version of mObywatel in the main menu, as the document requires specific Android and iOS versions. While the application and document activation are free, users may incur standard data transmission costs based on their operator tariff.
Updating Data and Replacing Documents Without ZUS Visits
Changes in first name, last name, PESEL number, benefit type, or NFZ branch number require a replacement document by submitting an application to ZUS. Incorrect data in the app can be addressed by contacting ZUS via a facility, phone, or e-visit. To update current data without visiting ZUS, users can select “Update” in the bottom menu of the mLegitymacja interface.
Security Measures and Offline Functionality
Data stored in the application is encrypted, certified for authenticity, and protected by an activation password. In case of a lost or stolen phone, users should block mObywatel documents, and prior to selling or transferring a device, the application must be uninstalled and device memory cleared. Additionally, the mLegitymacja functions offline if previously added, allowing display during checks, though internet disconnection disables data downloads and QR code verification.
