Pentagon Greenlights Path to Permanent US Military Base in Poland

During NATO defense ministerial meetings in Brussels, Polish Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz confirmed that Washington has responded favorably to Poland’s formal request to begin the process of establishing a permanent US military presence.

Strategic Cooperation and National Interest

Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz attended NATO meetings in Brussels on June 18, where he engaged in discussions regarding Alliance military capabilities, logistics, and nuclear deterrence strategies. The minister held high-level talks with US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth.

Kosiniak-Kamysz expressed gratitude to the United States for the positive response to his May 29 request. He described the development as a national, strategic interest that transcends political divides, noting that it represents a long-term goal pursued by successive Polish governments.

Deterrence in the Face of Russian Aggression

The minister addressed recent shifts in US force posture, including the reduction of Brigaded Combat Teams in Europe from four to three. He emphasized that Poland remains a priority partner, citing the country’s defense spending at 5 percent of its GDP and its commitment to the NATO 3.0 strategy.

Kosiniak-Kamysz highlighted the East Shield project, which has been recognized in both European and American security documents as a vital component for defending the alliance’s eastern flank against external threats.

Long-Term Investment and Infrastructure

Moving toward a permanent base will require extensive inter-institutional cooperation, funding, and multi-year investments. The defense minister characterized this endeavor as the most potent tool available for deterring the Russian Federation.

Currently, American troops operate in Poland primarily on a rotational basis. The only existing permanent US installation is the missile defense base in Redzikowo, which officially opened in November 2024.
