Manhunt Underway After Deadly Attack in Mierzawa: Ex-Policeman Wanted

A massive police search is underway in the Świętokrzyskie region after a 49-year-old former officer allegedly killed an 80-year-old man and critically wounded a 76-year-old woman in a Friday attack.

The incident in Mierzawa

The tragedy occurred on Friday, June 19, around 4:00 PM in Mierzawa. According to reports, the 49-year-old suspect quarreled with his wife; when she fled, he tracked her to the home of her parents, where the violence unfolded.

Fatal attack on in-laws

The assailant attacked his in-laws, leaving the 80-year-old man dead despite immediate emergency intervention. The 76-year-old woman underwent surgery overnight and remains in critical condition, according to Sergeant Sylwia Faryna of the Jędrzejów County Police.

Suspect background

The suspect is a former police officer who left the service in February 2023. Świętokrzyskie police stated on X that he worked in the prevention unit, lacks specialized training, and does not possess a weapons permit.

Police have launched an intense manhunt across the Jędrzejów district and the surrounding area. Authorities urge residents to exercise extreme caution as the search continues.

Arrest warrant issued

The District Prosecutor’s Office in Jędrzejów has issued a warrant for Dariusz Równicki, charging him with murder and attempted murder. The suspect is 180 cm tall, with short hair and a receding hairline; he was last seen wearing a light blue t-shirt, dark sweatpants, and sneakers, fleeing the scene on a yellow-and-black electric scooter.

Police resources mobilized

The Jędrzejów District Court has ordered his temporary arrest. Nearly 300 police officers are involved in the operation, supported by quad bikes, tracking dogs, drones, and a National Police helicopter. Authorities remind the public that harboring or aiding the fugitive is a crime punishable by up to five years in prison.
