Between late Friday and early Saturday, residents across major Brazilian state capitals received unauthorized emergency alerts claiming an alien invasion, prompting a national civil defense investigation into the security breach.
System Hijacked for False Alarms
Brazil’s nationwide civil defense alert system, designed for real-time disaster warnings, was exploited to send unauthorized messages to mobile devices in specific regions, bypassing silent mode settings. The incident occurred between 11:41 PM Friday and 1:23 AM Saturday.
Affected cities included São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Belo Horizonte, Brasília, Curitiba, Salvador, and Campo Grande. Residents received varying messages, including claims of an “alien attack” and warnings regarding potential tornadoes.
Official Response and Investigation
In response to the public alarm, civil defense authorities suspended the alert system to initiate a technical investigation. The Federal Police are working alongside technical teams to determine if the breach was the work of an individual or an organized group.
Authorities confirmed there was no actual threat to the population. Preliminary findings indicate that ten distinct false alerts were triggered, with nine sent via the official alert system and one through an legacy SMS service.
