The Threat of Extreme Temperatures
Poland faces an exceptionally hot period as temperatures rise sharply across the country. In Warsaw, thermometers could exceed 35°C, with extreme scenarios suggesting values nearing 42°C. This intensity poses significant risks to children, seniors, the chronically ill, pregnant women, outdoor workers, and animals.
Meteorological Forecast and Warnings
The Institute of Meteorology and Water Management (IMGW-PIB) reports that tropical air masses are moving into Poland. Second-degree heat warnings have been issued for parts of western Poland, including the Lubuskie, Wielkopolskie, and Dolnośląskie regions, with warnings expected to expand as the heat moves across the country.
From Thursday to Sunday, maximum temperatures will range from 30°C to 35°C, with a peak anticipated between Sunday and early next week. Local temperatures in western and central Poland could hit 36–39°C, accompanied by tropical nights where temperatures remain above 20°C.
Associated Risks and Safety Measures
The heat increases the risk of heatstroke, dehydration, forest fires, and strain on energy infrastructure. Authorities advise limiting outdoor activity, staying hydrated, wearing protective clothing, and avoiding alcohol or heavy exercise during peak heat hours.
Residents are encouraged to keep homes cool by shading windows and ventilating only during cooler nighttime hours. It is critical to monitor vulnerable neighbors and never leave children or animals in parked cars, as vehicle interiors can become lethal traps within minutes.
Recognizing Heatstroke Symptoms
Signs of heat-related illness include severe weakness, dizziness, nausea, rapid pulse, headache, confusion, dry skin, or loss of consciousness. If symptoms occur, the affected person should be moved to a cool area, hydrated if conscious, and medical assistance should be sought immediately.
