The Shift to Digital Credentials
Beginning June 30, 2026, Polish higher education institutions will offer digital diplomas that hold the same legal weight as paper versions. These documents, accessible via the mObywatel app, are designed to enhance document security and simplify the qualification verification process for graduates.
By 2027, digital issuance will become the standard requirement for all Polish universities. This initiative, developed by the Ministry of Digital Affairs, the Ministry of Science and Higher Education, and the National Information Processing Institute, represents a modernization of the academic certification system.
Security and Legal Validity
These digital diplomas are not mere scans; they are authoritative documents secured with qualified electronic signatures and seals to prevent tampering or forgery. Graduates can manage their diplomas and supplements through the mObywatel app or the official science portal.
The system, supported by the Electronic Diploma Repository (RDE) within the POL-on system, ensures high-level cybersecurity. While the digital format simplifies life for graduates and aids employers in instant verification, the system does not apply retroactively to degrees earned before June 30, 2026.
Benefits for Institutions and Employers
Universities stand to reduce administrative, printing, and storage costs through this transition. Meanwhile, employers gain access to a free, intuitive tool for verifying the authenticity of candidates’ qualifications, significantly reducing the risk of fraudulent documentation.
In addition to diplomas, the mObywatel application now supports digital student ID cards for doctoral candidates, further integrating academic credentials into the national digital infrastructure.
