69-Year-Old Detained After Mysterious Parcel Causes Chemical Incident at Iława Police Station

A 69-year-old man has been arrested in Poland after a package he sent to a woman in Iława released a cloud of hot gas upon being opened at a police station.

The Incident at the Station

The investigation stems from an event last week when a resident of the Iława district received an unsolicited package. After she brought the item to the local police station, the parcel suffered a violent depressurization, releasing a cloud of hot gas that struck both the woman and an officer.

The Olsztyn Provincial Police Headquarters clarified that the incident was not a conventional explosive charge. The facility sustained no structural damage, and there were no fragments or typical blast-related destruction.

Injuries and Safety Measures

The woman involved was uninjured, while the officer suffered superficial burns to his face and eye irritation, requiring hospital treatment. The station was closed for several hours while firefighters verified that no biological or radiological hazards were present.

Investigation and Arrest

Police arrested a 69-year-old man on Tuesday, noting that he was acquainted with the recipient through a private relationship. A search of his home uncovered computers, data storage devices, petards, marijuana plants, and containers holding unknown substances.

Legal Consequences

The prosecutor has charged the suspect with drug possession and the use of a dangerous substance. The Iława District Court has ordered the man to be held in temporary detention for three months, as he faces up to eight years in prison.
