President Karol Nawrocki argues he represents the Polish people’s voice, sparking a sharp rebuttal from the government regarding the nature of national security policy and international diplomatic strategy.

Nawrocki on National Will and Foreign Policy

President Karol Nawrocki stated in a social media post that he advocates for Poland’s strategic relationship with the United States, despite facing criticism from political opponents who later adopt his positions. He emphasized that he represents the will of the nation and remains committed to defending Polish interests.

Nawrocki further criticized the government’s approach toward Ukraine, arguing that his policies align with Polish national interest. He defended his decision-making by asserting that he must impose the will of the people upon those who prioritize political calculations over the expectations of citizens.

Government Response on Security Strategy

Government spokesperson Adam Szłapka rejected Nawrocki’s rhetoric, stating that national security is not a competition over slogans. He emphasized that building security requires a consistent approach involving NATO, the European Union, and investments in domestic defense industries.

Szłapka noted that the current government has successfully secured billions of euros through the SAFE program for defense modernization. He argued that political rivalry hinders national security, calling for cooperation rather than posturing.

Historical Disputes and Diplomatic Orders

The tension follows President Nawrocki’s June decision to revoke the Order of the White Eagle previously awarded to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The move was prompted by Ukraine naming a military unit after figures associated with the OUN and UPA, organizations viewed in Poland as perpetrators of the Volhynia genocide.

The disagreement highlights long-standing historical grievances between Poland and Ukraine regarding the events of 1943. While Poland views these events as genocide, Ukraine often emphasizes the anti-Soviet struggle of these organizations, leading to conflicting national narratives.

Developments Regarding a Permanent US Base

Discussions regarding a permanent U.S. military base in Poland are ongoing, according to Deputy Prime Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz. Pentagon officials are currently conducting a force review, with Poznań and Wrocław cited as potential locations.

Poland currently hosts approximately 10,000 American troops on a rotational basis. The government continues to advocate for a permanent presence, which would involve long-term stationing of units and their families, contrasting with the current temporary rotational model.
