Police Seek Answers in 20-Year-Old Olsztyn Murder Case

Authorities are appealing for public assistance after the discovery of human remains near the Łyna River in Olsztyn, which DNA testing has confirmed to be those of Stanisław Hornowicz, who vanished in 2004.

Discovery of Human Remains

In September of last year, two people walking near the Łyna River in Olsztyn stumbled upon buried human remains. Upon notification, police and prosecutors initiated an investigation, determining that the burial site was intentionally concealed and the death was not from natural causes.

Forensic examination revealed the deceased was an adult male, aged 40 to 55, who had been buried for a period ranging from several years to several decades.

Identifying Stanisław Hornowicz

With no identification documents found at the scene, investigators utilized DNA profiling to establish the victim’s identity. The results matched those of a family member, leading to the identification of Stanisław Hornowicz, born in 1958. Despite his death, no missing person report had ever been filed for him.

Criminal History and Disappearance

Hornowicz had an extensive criminal record, having served time in Olsztyn and Barczewo prisons. At the time he went missing, he was being sought by the District Court in Olsztyn for charges including attempted extortion and the use of forged documents.

Following his 1998 divorce, Hornowicz led an itinerant lifestyle. He last appeared in court in late 2003, and police inquiries in April 2004 confirmed he had not been seen at his registered address for several months prior.

Olsztyn investigators are now calling on anyone with relevant information concerning the death of Stanisław Hornowicz to come forward and contact the Criminal Division of the Provincial Police Headquarters in Olsztyn.
