Sybiha Proposes Crisis Management Package to Sikorski to Mend Polish-Ukrainian Ties

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha met with Polish counterpart Radosław Sikorski on Friday, July 3, proposing a formal crisis management package to address bilateral tensions and strengthen regional cooperation against Russia.

Diplomatic Engagement and Shared Challenges

Following their meeting, Minister Sybiha emphasized that Poland and Ukraine share a vital mutual interest, defined by their common struggle against Russian aggression. He reiterated that Ukraine is defending not only its own sovereignty but the security of Poland and the broader European continent.

Sybiha expressed deep gratitude for Poland’s early support in 2022. He stated that his current diplomatic position is fully aligned with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s call for an open, equal, and honest dialogue between the two nations.

The Crisis Management Proposal

The proposed package includes launching structured consultations between the respective Foreign Ministries and convening a meeting of historians specializing in the Second World War. Additionally, Sybiha requested that religious leaders from both nations use their influence to support bilateral reconciliation.

The minister noted that significant progress has been made over the past eighteen months, including the unblocking of exhumations and the resumption of historical congresses. He reaffirmed that Ukraine will continue to authorize search and exhumation operations.

Military Cooperation and Future Prospects

The ministers discussed the frontline situation, long-term sanctions against Russia, and ongoing military-technical cooperation. Poland provided assurances of continued support for Ukraine’s defense capabilities.

Talks also focused on economic reconstruction and infrastructure, specifically improving border crossing procedures and deepening ties between Polish and Ukrainian firms following the success of the URC-2026 conference in Gdańsk.

Moving Beyond Historical Tensions

Addressing recent controversies regarding the UPA, Sybiha assured Sikorski that there was no anti-Polish intent behind the unit naming, stressing that Ukraine respects its partners’ history and expects reciprocal respect.

Sybiha concluded by thanking Poland for its swift reaction to instances of xenophobia against Ukrainians. He urged both sides to set emotions aside, noting that diplomatic tools must be prioritized to prevent divisions that only serve Moscow’s interests.
