Embryo Mix-up at Szpital Południowy: Ministry Launches Investigation

Medical personnel at Szpital Południowy performed an embryo transfer using the wrong sample last month after two patients with identical surnames were confused during the identification process.

The Incident and Identification Error

Rynek Zdrowia reports that the error occurred one month ago when two patients with the same surname were present at the facility. The mistake took place during the embryo identification and thawing stage, resulting in an embryo transfer involving the incorrect couple.

Embryologists detected the error rapidly, and the hospital confirmed that no pregnancy occurred due to safety procedures. The staff member responsible for the incident has been removed from duty.

Ministry of Health Oversight

The hospital officially reported the incident to the Ministry of Health as an adverse event. The ministry is now reviewing documentation and conducting an inspection to determine if the error stemmed from negligence or a systemic failure.

In Vitro Funding and Government Policy

The government continues to support IVF, noting that 1 to 1.5 million couples in Poland face fertility issues. The state has allocated at least 500 million PLN annually for the IVF reimbursement program, which runs from June 2024 through December 2028, with Szpital Południowy serving as a participating provider.
