Who is eligible for a pension recalculation
Retirees who continued working after receiving their pension are the primary beneficiaries, as new contributions further increase their capital. Additionally, those who have discovered historical employment documents or salary records previously missing from their files may qualify for a higher payout.
Individuals who held early retirement rights and have since reached the statutory retirement age are also eligible to have their benefits reassessed in accordance with current legal standards.
How the calculation process works
When recalculating a pension, the Social Insurance Institution (ZUS) aggregates all accumulated capital, including contributions made after the initial award. These funds are then indexed to reflect economic shifts, such as wage growth and currency valuation changes.
The total indexed capital is divided by the average life expectancy at the time of the recalculation. A higher capital balance or more favorable calculation rules directly result in a higher monthly pension. If a recalculation proves less favorable, the existing pension amount is retained, posing no financial risk to the beneficiary.
Addressing the June pension discrepancy
A significant issue affected pensions granted or recalculated in June between 2009 and 2019 due to unfavorable indexing rules. Starting in January 2026, ZUS was mandated to automatically recalculate these benefits to ensure fairness.
Most of these automatic adjustments were finalized by the end of March 2026. Data indicates that retirees affected by this specific correction received an average increase of over 200 PLN per month, with some cases yielding even higher results.
Submitting an application to ZUS
While some adjustments occur automatically, retirees wishing to include late-submitted contributions or newly discovered employment documents must formally apply. This is done by submitting the ZUS ER-WPS form to any ZUS branch, via mail, or through the electronic PUE ZUS platform.
It is strongly advised that applicants attach all supporting documentation regarding employment periods and earnings. Reviewing one’s status is worthwhile, as unclaimed benefits may remain available for those who qualify based on overlooked work history.
