Trump and Putin Hold Lengthy Phone Call Amid Independence Day Celebrations

Following an initiative from the American side, Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin discussed the war in Ukraine and diplomatic relations during a phone conversation held on the 250th anniversary of U.S. independence.

Diplomatic Inquiries and the Conflict in Ukraine

According to Kremlin advisor Yury Ushakov, the Saturday call was initiated by the United States. The leaders discussed the settlement of the conflict in Ukraine, specifically in the context of Donald Trump’s planned attendance at the NATO summit in Turkey on July 7-8.

The U.S. side reportedly declared readiness to support efforts to end hostilities, with special envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner prepared to travel to Moscow. The Kremlin reiterated its preference for a political-diplomatic solution that accounts for its fundamental security approaches, while blaming Kyiv and its allies for the ongoing escalation.

International Relations and Future Cooperation

Putin expressed hope that current negotiations regarding U.S.-Iran relations would yield long-term solutions, a stance for which Trump thanked him. The two leaders also noted the upcoming joint mission to the International Space Station from the Baikonur Cosmodrome.

During the call, Trump mentioned his admiration for the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg. Putin, drawing on Russia’s experience hosting the 2018 World Cup, wished the U.S. success in hosting the upcoming football tournament. The Kremlin confirmed the invitation for Trump to visit Russia remains open.

Zelenskyy’s Dialogue with Washington

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy also spoke with Trump to offer congratulations on the 250th anniversary of U.S. independence. Zelenskyy stated on X that they discussed the front-line situation and diplomatic efforts, noting a real prospect for ending the war.

Zelenskyy expressed his gratitude for the military and political assistance provided by the United States, including Patriot and Javelin systems. Both leaders agreed to continue their discussions at the upcoming NATO summit in Ankara.

U.S. Independence Day Celebrations and Domestic Rhetoric

Main celebrations for the 250th anniversary at the National Mall in Washington were delayed by approximately 90 minutes due to severe weather, necessitating an evacuation of a portion of the estimated 375,000 attendees.

In his address, Donald Trump characterized communism as a fatal threat to the United States. He urged the adoption of the Save America Act and declared that the country would never become communist, framing the issue as an urgent domestic priority.
