Controversial Remarks on Tennis Stars
The controversy stems from comments made by Ewa Woydyłło on the “Return” podcast regarding Polish tennis player Iga Świątek and Belarusian athlete Aryna Sabalenka. Woydyłło characterized Świątek as “foolish” and “frightened,” suggesting she has experienced a sporting burnout. Regarding Sabalenka, the psychologist used derogatory terms, including “Russian babe” and “boor,” and stated she “is simply a man.”
The recording was subsequently removed from the internet, and the authors issued an apology to Iga Świątek and her coaching team. Świątek’s PR manager confirmed that the team would not comment on the psychologist’s statements.
Professional Ethics and Public Commentary
The fallout quickly expanded beyond sports into a broader discussion on the ethical responsibilities of psychologists speaking publicly about human psychology. Critics, including psychiatrist Maja Herman and sociologist Katarzyna Krzywicka-Zdunek, argued that Woydyłło crossed the line by evaluating a person rather than their athletic behavior without ever examining them.
Conversely, psychotherapist Robert Rutkowski defended Woydyłło, arguing that her remarks did not constitute a formal psychological diagnosis and that she spoke as a private tennis fan rather than an expert. However, Rutkowski acknowledged that an expert’s private opinion is difficult to separate from their public authority.
The Boundaries of Expert Opinion
The central debate focuses on where an expert’s right to personal opinion ends and the responsibility of their public authority begins. Mental health professionals emphasize the fundamental difference between evaluating specific behaviors—such as game performance or perceived pressure—and assigning psychological labels to individuals without a clinical basis.
Although the Polish Psychological Association has not issued an official statement, many practitioners point to ethical standards that require caution when discussing a person’s mental state. Observers note that the discussion ultimately highlights concerns over how public authority figures communicate and maintain professional standards.
