Bodies Found in Elevator After Brussels Skyscraper Fire

Emergency responders discovered several bodies trapped in an elevator shaft following a fire in a Brussels office building currently undergoing major renovations, as rescue efforts continue for six missing persons.

The Incident and Rescue Operations

The fire broke out on the second floor and spread into the elevator shafts, causing two cabins to become trapped. Emergency crews have been unable to access one of the cabins fully but confirmed the presence of two or three bodies inside. The exact death toll remains unconfirmed.

At the time of the blaze, approximately 200 people were reported to be on-site. Evacuated construction workers have been relocated to an administrative center for support. Authorities are still searching for six individuals with whom they have been unable to establish contact. Two people were hospitalized with burns, and one firefighter was treated for heatstroke.

Ongoing Investigation into Causes

The building, which houses apartments, restaurants, and a rooftop bar, was undergoing a complete renovation when the fire started. Officials have not yet determined the cause of the blaze.

This incident follows other recent fatal fires, including a pub fire in Bangkok, Thailand, which resulted in at least 30 deaths, with investigations pointing to blocked emergency exits and a lack of fire-resistant materials. Separately, a forest fire in Los Gallardos, Andalusia, Spain, claimed 12 lives following a heatwave, with reports suggesting a downed power line sparked the disaster.
