Discovery in the Gdańsk Forest
The State Forests and the Provincial Office for the Protection of Monuments in Gdańsk reported the discovery of a bronze sword dating back roughly 2,700 years to the Bronze Age. Officials noted that in those ancient times, such a weapon would have been an incredibly expensive commodity, potentially equivalent in value to an entire herd of cattle.
Expert Recovery and Collaboration
The artifact was discovered by Marcin Wiśniewski within the jurisdiction of the Gdańsk Forest District. Wiśniewski, who had previously cooperated with the Provincial Conservator of Monuments on another Bronze Age find in the area, worked alongside officials to recover the sword using standard archaeological methodology.
Museum Future and Historical Context
The Provincial Conservator of Monuments will determine the final destination for the sword, with a potential transfer to a museum under consideration. This site is not without history; in the 1920s, two bronze antenna swords were discovered in a nearby peat bog in Rynarzewo, though those artifacts were lost during World War II.
