A witness recorded a man approaching a European bison too closely in the Białowieża Forest on Monday, prompting experts and the national park to warn the public against extreme recklessness.

A video of a dangerous incident was published as a warning by a witness who was visiting the Białowieża Forest with his wife. A man approached a bison too closely and entered its safety zone, prompting the animal to react defensively and knock him to the ground on Monday, as described by Mr. Grzegorz on the Magia Podlasia Facebook profile. Fearing another incident, witnesses shouted at the victim not to move.

The man lay on the ground near the bison for a short time while the animal remained unfazed and began plucking grass. Mr. Grzegorz then slowly drove his vehicle toward the man to distract the bison, which began to walk away upon seeing the car. Once the situation became safer, the man stood up.

Expert Stresses Bison Mating Season and Human Irresponsibility

Prof. Rafał Kowalczyk from the Mammal Research Institute of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Białowieża assessed the situation as another example of extreme human irresponsibility. The expert noted that such cases are happening more frequently, stating that he often observes people getting too close to bison and ignoring warning attempts before later complaining about aggressive animals.

According to the professor, documenting the event clearly shows human stupidity alongside the patience and calm of the bison. He noted that these traits among large animals keep gore incidents relatively low despite irresponsible human behavior, with no fatalities recorded in such situations.

Bison Mating Season Increases Animal Sensitivity

A person approaching a bison is perceived as a potential threat, a reaction intensified by the current season. The professor appealed to tourists to exercise caution, noting that the bison mating season is underway and males can be stimulated. He urged the public to admire bison responsibly from a safe distance of over 50 meters, emphasizing that they are wild and powerful animals.

Białowieża National Park Issues Safety Appeal

The Białowieża National Park also issued a statement regarding the attack, which it characterized as a defense against an intrusive human. The park appealed for common sense and caution when contacting wildlife, reminding the public that bison are wild, strong animals capable of defending themselves when human beings breach their safety zone.

The park requested that visitors maintain a minimum distance of 50 meters from bison, avoid approaching them, refrain from trying to photograph them up close, and avoid luring them with food. It stressed the importance of respecting the wild nature of animals, noting that human and animal safety depends entirely on human responsibility.
