Fatal Fire Engulfs Antwerp Apartment Building

A deadly fire broke out in a 10-story residential building in Antwerp’s Linkeroever district on Wednesday morning, resulting in multiple fatalities and injuries as emergency services launched an evacuation operation.

The Incident in Linkeroever

The fire originated on the eighth floor of the high-rise building shortly before 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, quickly filling the structure with dense smoke. Officials have confirmed that there are multiple fatalities and injuries, though a specific count remains unavailable as emergency responders continue their search of the premises.

Approximately 200 people usually reside in the building, and a full-scale evacuation was initiated. Authorities have advised nearby residents to keep their windows and doors closed and to turn off ventilation systems due to the heavy smoke lingering in the area.

Survival and Rescue Efforts

Witnesses described chaotic scenes as the fire spread through the building. One resident reported that a loss of electricity was followed three minutes later by the activation of fire alarms, by which point the hallways were already thick with smoke.

Another resident recounted being trapped in their home, forced to retreat to their balcony for safety. Firefighters eventually arrived and used a ladder to rescue the individuals waiting at the balcony about 10 minutes later.

Official Response

Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever addressed the tragedy on the X platform, stating his thoughts were with the victims and the evacuated residents. He expressed his gratitude to the emergency services for their rapid and safe response in assisting the many people affected by the fire.

Firefighting efforts have been significantly hampered by poor visibility and heavy smoke within the building. As of now, the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
