Five Climbers Die on Elbrus After Sudden Weather Collapse

Five experienced mountaineers from Bosnia and Herzegovina died while attempting to scale Russia’s Mount Elbrus after severe weather trapped them in extreme conditions.

Rescue and Survival

Two members of the expedition managed to survive the extreme conditions prevailing at the peak. One of the men successfully descended the mountain alone to call for help, while rescue teams located the other. Both survivors were transported to a hospital, where they are currently being examined by doctors, noted Klix.

It was added that three men and two women died in the tragedy.

Sudden Weather Deterioration

Information that the group was trapped on Elbrus and unable to descend emerged on Saturday. According to local guides, weather conditions at the start of the climb were initially relatively favorable. However, the weather deteriorated sharply; wind speeds reached 45 kilometers per hour and then increased to 70 kilometers per hour.

Experienced Mountaineers

All members of the expedition were experienced alpinists with numerous successful ascents of peaks exceeding 5,000 meters above sea level to their credit. Bosnian media recalled that some of them belonged to the Mountain Rescue Service in Zenica and the “Vedro” mountaineering society.

Kenan Hrustanović, head of the Zenica Mountain Rescue Service, confirmed that the climbers hailed from Zenica, located in central BiH.

Diplomatic Response

Elmedin Konaković, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Bosnia and Herzegovina, stated that the ministry had been taking action since the morning hours regarding reports of the tragedy on Mount Elbrus. He noted that the ministry immediately contacted the BiH embassy in Moscow to determine the full circumstances of the accident.
