German Authorities Arrest “Disposable Agent” Suspected of Spying on Defense Firm

German law enforcement has detained a Ukrainian citizen in Thuringia suspected of photographing a Bavarian defense company’s facility in June and passing the images to a handler.

Arrest in Thuringia

The arrest took place in Thuringia, in eastern Germany. According to authorities, the suspect, a Ukrainian citizen, allegedly took photographs of a Bavarian defense company’s facility site in June and passed them on to his handler. The Munich Local Court issued an arrest warrant for the suspect. The man was apprehended by officers from the Bavarian State Criminal Police Office (LKA) and the Thuringia police. He is currently being held in pretrial detention.

Suspected Disposable Agent

Investigators suspect that the man is a so-called disposable agent. This refers to individuals recruited by foreign intelligence services without stringent requirements and used for relatively simple operations. It was not disclosed which country the suspect was allegedly spying for.

Growing Sabotage and Espionage Threats

This is another individual arrested in Germany who is suspected of spying on defense facilities or military transports. In many of these cases, authorities suspect the detainees were laying the groundwork for acts of sabotage that form part of hybrid warfare.

Counterintelligence Assessment

The German Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution (BfV) assesses that since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, the threat of espionage, sabotage, and disinformation on behalf of Moscow has increased significantly.
