Hamas Dissolves Gaza Government to Neutralize War Pretext

Hamas has announced the dissolution of its administrative committee in the Gaza Strip, aiming to facilitate a transition to a new governing body while challenging Israel to end its military operations.

Administrative Restructuring

Ismail al-Tawabta, director of the Hamas government press office, announced the resignation of the Government Oversight and Coordination Committee. The organization stated the move is intended to facilitate an administrative transition to the National Committee for the Administration of the Gaza Strip (NCAG).

The NCAG was established by a Peace Council created by U.S. President Donald Trump during negotiations that led to an October 2025 ceasefire. The Hamas government had functioned in Gaza for nearly two decades.

International Pressure and Skepticism

The Peace Council acknowledged the dissolution but stated its evaluation would depend on actions rather than promises regarding the needs of Gaza’s residents. The body further called for the disarmament of Hamas.

CNN reports that the move is a symbolic attempt to pressure Israel regarding the ceasefire agreement, as President Trump pushes Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to implement the peace plan. However, Hamas maintains strict control over areas not occupied by Israeli forces, and analysts remain uncertain about the potential influence of Hamas on the new administration.

Diplomatic Maneuvering

Hamas has appealed to international mediators to press Israel to allow a committee of technocrats into Gaza. Experts suggest this move may also be an attempt to appeal directly to the Trump administration while bypassing Netanyahu.

Negotiations remain deadlocked over the issue of disarmament, which Hamas rejects. Observers note it is unclear if the new administration will be able to function, or who will ultimately oversee security structures within the territory.

Political Standoff

Reports indicate that both Hamas and Prime Minister Netanyahu are delaying progress on the peace plan. Saudi newspaper Asharq Al-Awsat suggested Hamas believes Netanyahu views concessions as political suicide ahead of upcoming Israeli elections, prompting the group to stall for time.

While the war has significantly reduced the ranks of Hamas, the organization retains control of the territory, including the use of force against perceived internal threats. Israel began its military campaign in Gaza following the October 7, 2023, attack that resulted in approximately 1,200 deaths and 251 hostages.
