The International Olympic Committee has lifted the suspension of the Russian Olympic Committee, allowing for its temporary return while enforcing strict anti-doping protocols and maintaining a ban on national symbols.

Status of the Russian Olympic Committee
The International Olympic Committee has decided to lift the suspension previously imposed on the Russian Olympic Committee in October 2023. Following a thorough analysis by its legal commission, the IOC determined that the Russian body no longer incorporates regional sports organizations within Ukrainian territory, and the ROC has confirmed it will not conduct operations in those areas.
The IOC will continue to monitor the activities of the ROC closely. Despite this reinstatement, the organization has not yet granted approval for Russian athletes or teams to compete under the national flag or anthem, noting that such a decision will be made in due time.
Changes to Qualification and Verification
The IOC has advised international sports federations to conclude the three-year verification program regarding the neutrality of Russian athletes for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games. Requirements have been eased, and athletes and teams will no longer be screened for their political views.
Similar decisions regarding Belarusian athletes were previously implemented by the IOC in May 2026.
Stringent Anti-Doping Requirements
To address concerns within the global sports community regarding the integrity of the Russian Anti-Doping Agency and to satisfy the World Anti-Doping Code, all returning Russian athletes must meet rigorous anti-doping standards. International federations are tasked with establishing timelines for mandatory, repeated testing by WADA services before athletes are cleared to compete.
Stance on the War in Ukraine
The IOC maintains that its position on the Russian invasion of Ukraine remains unchanged. It continues to condemn the conflict and reaffirms its solidarity with the Ukrainian Olympic community, pledging ongoing support through the established Solidarity Fund for Ukraine to assist athletes in overcoming current challenges.
