Justice Minister Orders Review of All Deaths at Southern Hospital

Minister of Justice Waldemar Żurek announced a comprehensive review of all fatalities at the Southern Hospital in Warsaw, including cases previously dismissed by prosecutors, following allegations of medical malpractice.

Prosecutor General Initiates Comprehensive Investigation

Justice Minister Waldemar Żurek announced that prosecutors are examining 32 cases related to the Southern Hospital, including threats and misappropriation. Among these, 12 cases concern patient deaths, though the Minister did not clarify if this number deviates from hospital norms.

Of the cases involving the emergency department, three were refused initiation, four were discontinued, and one remains active. Minister Żurek emphasized that authorities will review all files, including those previously closed.

Allegations of Irregularities and Medical Errors

Former surgery department head Emil Jędrzejewski recently alleged that medical errors and systemic failures at the facility led to preventable deaths. Jędrzejewski previously failed to respond to a hospital inquiry regarding these concerns, a matter expected to be addressed during his scheduled hearing.

The current department head, Dr. Piotr Szenk, disputed these claims, stating that he and his staff observed no such irregularities. He noted that Dr. Adam Macech serves as the emergency department head, while Dawid Kacprzyk was primarily responsible for scheduling and personnel organization.

Controversy Surrounding Dawid Kacprzyk

Dawid Kacprzyk, a medical resident and former local politician, faced scrutiny after reports alleged he created an unofficial admissions track for members of the Civic Coalition and their families. Following these revelations, Kacprzyk resigned from his political affiliations, and the hospital terminated his contract.

In response to the scandal, the board of the Warsaw Southern Hospital was dismissed at the request of Warsaw Mayor Rafał Trzaskowski.
