Karol Nawrocki Questioned by Prosecutors Over Museum Apartment Scandal

Prosecutors questioned Karol Nawrocki at the Presidential Palace last Thursday regarding an investigation into the alleged misuse of museum-owned apartments during his tenure as director of the WWII Museum in Gdańsk.

Details of the Interrogation

The questioning took place on July 9 in the President’s office in Warsaw, where the presiding prosecutor traveled to meet with Nawrocki. Prosecutor Duszyński stated that the content of the testimony remains confidential and will be analyzed alongside other gathered evidence.

Scope of the Ongoing Investigation

The investigation, launched in February 2025, examines the potential abuse of power by public officials between October 18, 2017, and June 2024. Authorities are looking into claims regarding the unauthorized, free-of-charge use of museum rooms and apartments in Gdańsk.

The probe has been extended until August 24. Prosecutors have requested additional documentation from the WWII Museum to determine the next steps in the legal proceedings.

Leadership and Testimony

Nawrocki was questioned due to his former role as director during the period under investigation. Other former directors who led the institution between 2017 and 2024, specifically Grzegorz Berendt and Rafał Wnuk, have also been questioned as witnesses.

Allegations and Defense

The investigation stems from reports that Nawrocki occupied an apartment in a complex owned by the museum for over six months without payment, despite residing only five kilometers away. In early 2025, Nawrocki defended his actions, stating he only used the apartment for two 10-day COVID-19 quarantine periods and for official business meetings with guests.

Separate Legal Proceedings

Beyond the museum case, prosecutors are simultaneously investigating a separate matter involving the acquisition of a studio apartment belonging to Jerzy Ż. by Marta and Karol Nawrocki.
