Kyiv Warns of Russian Disinformation Plot Regarding Volhynia Massacre

Ukrainian officials report that the FSB plans to release forged documents regarding the Volhynia tragedy on July 5th, aiming to fracture the diplomatic relationship between Poland and Ukraine.

The FSB’s Information Warfare Campaign

Andriy Kovalenko, head of Ukraine’s Center for Countering Disinformation, stated on Telegram that FSB Director Aleksandr Bortnikov is directing operations intended to destabilize Polish-Ukrainian ties. Moscow has allegedly ordered state media to amplify these fabricated narratives regarding World War II events.

Historical Disputes and Rising Tensions

This warning follows recent diplomatic friction between Warsaw and Kyiv concerning the commemoration of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA). Tensions escalated after President Volodymyr Zelenskyy named a military unit after UPA heroes, prompting widespread criticism from Polish officials.

The situation led to the revocation of a state honor previously bestowed upon Zelenskyy by Karol Nawrocki. The UPA remains a deeply divisive issue, as Polish historians categorize the 1943 attacks on Poles in Volhynia as genocide, while many in Ukraine view the organization as a symbol of anti-Soviet independence.

Diplomatic Efforts to Manage Friction

Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski recently met with his Ukrainian counterpart, Andriy Sybiha, emphasizing the need for quiet diplomacy over public grandstanding. He noted that while some politicians prioritize scoring points, the current climate requires cooling emotions to focus on national interests.

Prime Minister Donald Tusk indicated that Poland expects a gesture from Ukraine following the controversial decision regarding the UPA. Tusk noted he has received appeals from figures such as former President Viktor Yushchenko to work collaboratively on historical issues to ensure the past does not obstruct the future.
