Lithuania Warns of Russian Escalation Risks Targeting Poland and Baltics

Lithuanian Defense Minister Laurynas Kasčiūnas warns that Putin may seek to escalate regional tensions, with intelligence suggesting potential Russian provocations against Poland and Baltic states to test NATO unity.

The Kremlin’s Strategic Dilemma

“The war in Ukraine is not going according to Russia’s plans. Today, explosions are echoing inside Russia itself, and there are fuel shortages. Russian society is already questioning the Kremlin regime, asking why this is happening and where the promised victory is,” Defense Minister Laurynas Kasčiūnas stated in an interview with LRT public radio.

Threats to Regional Infrastructure

Kasčiūnas indicated that Putin and his inner circle are seeking a new escalation, with Poland and the Baltic countries currently the most vulnerable. This follows reports from Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda suggesting Russia is planning provocations to test NATO’s resolve.

According to the Lithuanian leader, intelligence indicates potential Russian attacks on critical regional infrastructure. These threats could involve both conventional and unconventional means.

Poland’s Stance on Security

Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski has previously suggested that Russia could carry out a false-flag operation using Ukrainian drones. In an interview with the Italian newspaper Il Messaggero, Sikorski noted that while Russia has invaded Poland many times in history and threats are taken seriously, Poland does not feel panic.

Responding to Kremlin suggestions that Warsaw should consider its own security, Sikorski remarked, “We have been thinking about our security against Russia for about 500 years and we will not stop.” He added that Putin currently lacks the means to launch a full-scale attack, though he may attempt various provocations.

Defensive Measures and Coordination

On Monday, July 20, Kasčiūnas emphasized that Lithuania has strengthened the protection of its transport and energy infrastructure. Security services are continuously analyzing intelligence and coordinating actions with allies.

He further noted that strengthening Lithuanian defense and integration with NATO and the European Union does not constitute a provocation against Russia.
