PiS Leadership Conflict: Morawiecki Leads Czarnek in New Poll Amid Internal Ultimatum

As the Law and Justice party faces internal friction over a leadership ban on independent foundations, a new poll suggests Mateusz Morawiecki holds a clear advantage over Przemysław Czarnek as preferred prime ministerial candidate.

Internal Party Disputes

The Law and Justice (PiS) party leadership recently passed a resolution banning members from participating in political foundations or associations. The ultimatum, which expires on July 22, affects organizations linked to figures like Mateusz Morawiecki and Jacek Sasin.

While Sasin complied with the directive, Morawiecki declared his intent to continue the work of his organization, “Rozwój Plus.” A letter supporting his position was signed by 45 parliamentarians and MEPs.

Czarnek’s Controversial Stance

Meanwhile, Przemysław Czarnek, a contender for the party’s future prime minister nomination, suggested on TV Republika that the European Union should halt funding for Ukraine’s defense and reconstruction until it changes its policy toward Poland.

Jarosław Kaczyński quickly distanced the party from these remarks, emphasizing that military aid to Ukraine remains a critical matter for Polish national security and stating that the party leadership would address Czarnek’s comments.

Public Preference

A United Surveys by IBRiS poll conducted for Wirtualna Polska on July 16-17 reveals that 40.7 percent of respondents prefer Mateusz Morawiecki as the PiS candidate for prime minister, compared to 18 percent for Przemysław Czarnek. A large segment of respondents, 41.3 percent, were undecided.

Among opposition voters, the gap narrows significantly, with 37 percent favoring Morawiecki and 36 percent supporting Czarnek. The study was conducted on a nationwide sample of 1,000 adults using a mix-mode method.

Future of Morawiecki in PiS

Given the ultimatum, speculation persists that Kaczyński may move to remove Morawiecki and his loyalists from the party. Previous polling from the Instytut Badań Pollster suggests that 56 percent of those surveyed would support or lean toward the idea of Morawiecki leaving PiS to form his own party.
