Major Seismic Tremor Hits Lubin Mine; Rescue Operations Underway

A powerful seismic event struck the Lubin mining facility at 8:11 AM, trapping one equipment operator while nineteen other miners have been successfully evacuated to safety by rescue teams.

KGHM Polska Miedź reported that a significant tremor occurred at the Lubin Mining Division at 8:11 AM. A rescue operation involving the Mining and Metallurgy Rescue Unit was immediately launched following the incident.

An operator remains trapped inside the reinforced cabin of a mining machine covered by rock mass. Rescuers are currently working to safely extract the individual, who remains in contact with the surface. The 19 other miners present in the danger zone at the time of the tremor are safe.

Severity of the Seismic Event

Mirosław Kuk from the KGHM Communications Department noted that while tremors are regular occurrences, this specific event was exceptionally strong, measuring above 4.0 on the Richter scale. Such magnitudes are considered significant within mining conditions and were reportedly felt by residents of Lubin and the surrounding area.

Overview of the Lubin Mining Division

Lubin is the oldest mine in Poland’s Copper District, extracting polymetallic ore primarily containing copper and silver. As of December 31, 2024, the Lubin-Małomice deposit holds over 319 million tons of copper ore, with average concentrations of 1.23 percent copper and 53 grams per megagram of silver.
