PiS Demands Polish Government Block Ukraine’s EU Accession

Law and Justice (PiS) MP Przemysław Czarnek announced a parliamentary motion calling on the government to oppose Ukraine’s EU integration, citing the glorification of UPA figures as “pro-genocide” ideology.

PiS has announced the submission of a parliamentary resolution aimed at forcing the Polish government to oppose Ukraine’s accession to the European Union. During a press conference held at the Monument to the Victims of Volhynia in Lublin, Przemysław Czarnek stated that the party demands the government take all necessary actions to halt any further integration process.

Controversy Over Historical Memory

The motion follows the naming of a Ukrainian military unit after “heroes of the UPA,” an act Czarnek described as the “glorification of the perpetrators of the Volhynia massacre.” He argued that the EU cannot be built on an ideology that contradicts Christian and European values, nor can it include a state that draws from the legacy of mass violence.

Historical Ties and Moral Prerequisites

Czarnek acknowledged instances of Ukrainians helping Poles survive during the era, noting these acts as proof that Ukraine does not need to honor genocide perpetrators to maintain its national identity. He emphasized that Ukraine’s path to European structures is blocked as long as the state continues to invoke the legacy of the brutal, inhumane acts committed against the Polish people in Volhynia and surrounding regions.
