Nawrocki Snubs Ukraine Recovery Conference Over Missing Invitation

President Karol Nawrocki will not attend this week’s Ukraine Recovery Conference in Gdańsk, with presidential minister Marcin Przydacz confirming that the President received no formal invitation from Prime Minister Donald Tusk.

Diplomatic snub or administrative oversight?

Presidential minister Marcin Przydacz stated that the absence of an invitation for President Karol Nawrocki means he has no intention of participating in the Ukraine Recovery Conference scheduled for this Thursday and Friday. Przydacz emphasized that none of the President’s officials will attend the event either, as they also remain uninvited.

Przydacz expressed skepticism regarding the conference’s focus, characterizing previous iterations as mere fundraising exercises. He urged Prime Minister Tusk to prioritize Poland’s national interests over the primary goal of raising funds for Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Escalating tensions and accusations of ingratitude

Addressing recent allegations of pro-Russian sentiment directed at Poland by the Ukrainian side, Przydacz labeled these claims as insolent. He argued that Ukraine is attempting to deflect from its own internal corruption scandals by manufacturing historical disputes and questioning Poland’s stance.

The minister characterized the current rhetoric from Ukraine’s top leadership as deeply ungrateful, given Poland’s extensive political, financial, and military support. He warned that if Ukraine wishes to integrate into a United Europe, it must seek the sympathy of the Polish people rather than insulting them.

The Order of the White Eagle fallout

The conference exclusion follows a period of heightened friction between the two nations, exacerbated by President Zelenskyy honoring a military unit named after the UPA. In response, President Nawrocki recently revoked Zelenskyy’s Order of the White Eagle.

Following that decision, President Zelenskyy announced he had returned the decoration. Consequently, several former Ukrainian presidents and high-ranking officials have renounced their own Polish state distinctions, further complicating bilateral relations ahead of the recovery summit.
