New Pensioner ID Card 2026: ZUS Issues 24,000 Documents, No Replacement Required for Old Cards

Since July 13, Poland’s Social Insurance Institution has issued over 24,000 newly secured pensioner identification cards, clarifying that current cardholders are not required to replace their valid documents.

New Pensioner ID Cards Issued Under Updated Design

Starting July 13, ZUS began issuing pensioner identification cards according to a new, better-secured design, with over 24,000 such documents delivered to beneficiaries so far. For current holders of valid cards, the key message is that the design change does not impose an obligation to exchange them, while ZUS explains when a new blank will be issued and what discounts the document guarantees.

The new design for the pensioner ID card has been in effect since July 1, 2026, though this did not mean an immediate replacement of all documents, as regulations allowed ZUS to use previously prepared blanks until July 12.

In practice, the first cards under the new design began being issued on July 13, 2026, covering both the traditional plastic card and the electronic version available in the mObywatel app. According to ZUS data provided to the editorial office, the institution issued 24,635 pensioner ID cards featuring the new design between July 13 and July 31, 2026.

Card Replacement Rules and Validity of Existing Documents

The mere change of the ID card design does not mean there is an obligation to replace the existing card, as traditional pensioner ID cards are issued upon request and subject to replacement in specific situations such as loss, theft, expiration, or a change in the pensioner’s data printed on the card.

Seniors do not need to submit an application to ZUS or visit an office simply because a new document design has been in effect since July 2026, allowing pensioners with valid cards to continue using them under previous rules. The new design is primarily issued to individuals receiving an ID card for the first time and those needing an additional copy.

Enhanced Security Features and Digital mObywatel Version

The redesign does not grant new entitlements or alter the rules for using benefits, with the primary goal being the adaptation of the document to current security standards using durable PVC material and advanced anti-counterfeiting features.

The document continues to display essential owner information, including the PESEL number and the type of benefit received.

The electronic pensioner ID card available in the mObywatel application also received a new look containing the owner’s photo, first and last name, PESEL number, document number, and expiration date, while information regarding the issuing ZUS branch was removed from the app.

Entitlements and Discounts Available to Seniors

The pensioner ID card serves as a document confirming the status of a person entitled to specific benefits, and can be obtained by individuals with rights to a retirement pension, disability pension, or teachers’ compensatory benefit.

The document may be required when utilizing various discounts and entitlements offered to seniors, though the scope of discounts depends on specific regulations and the rules enforced by individual carriers, institutions, and service organizers.

Because the design change does not require seniors to take additional action, existing documents retain their full validity.
