Prison Break Attempt in Lublin: Eight Officers Punished After Security Breach

Eight prison guards in Lublin have faced disciplinary action following a daring October jailbreak attempt, where two inmates used a smuggled hacksaw blade to cut through their cell window bars.

Internal Disciplinary Consequences

Following an internal audit and an investigation by the Internal Affairs Office, the Prison Service took disciplinary measures against eight officers. One staff member was exempted from punishment, while others received reprimands, warnings of partial unfitness for service, or were reassigned to lower positions.

Lt. Col. Arleta Pęconek, spokesperson for the Prison Service, stated that these penalties represent significant setbacks for the officers, including the loss of promotion opportunities. Repeat offenses could lead to demotion or dismissal from the service.

Security Overhaul and Inmate Oversight

The Prison Service conducted instructional sessions for staff and reinforced security procedures throughout the Lublin region. The inmates involved in the escape attempt have been placed on a restricted list, ensuring they are subject to heightened supervision if transferred to any other facility in the country.

Since the incident on October 24, officials report that no further attempts by inmates to escape from the facility’s premises have been recorded.

Prosecutorial Investigation and Legal Status

The District Prosecutor’s Office in Lublin has divided the case into three separate inquiries. One inmate has already accepted a one-year prison sentence for the escape attempt, while the trial for the second individual remains ongoing.

A second investigation into the source of the smuggled blade was closed without identifying a suspect. A third, ongoing investigation focuses on potential professional negligence by prison staff, which carries a potential sentence of up to 10 years in prison, though no charges have been filed to date.
