The Russian Ministry of Defense stated that the crew of the frigate initially deployed flares and used sound signals to contact the British yacht, claiming the vessel continued a dangerous approach. British Government and Passenger Accounts

Prime Minister Keir Starmer called the incident deeply concerning and reckless, noting that British defense assessments suggest the Russian ship was drifting and the shots were warnings. Jane and Alan Kelvey, the couple on board the yacht Bright Future, described the encounter 23 miles off the Isle of Wight as surreal, maintaining they were not on a collision course.

According to Mrs. Kelvey, the yacht responded to multiple sound signals by steering away to demonstrate they had noticed the frigate. She confirmed hearing four or five small arms shots shortly thereafter, which she did not believe were aimed directly at their boat.

Context of the Shadow Fleet

BBC Verify reported that the Russian frigate, Admiral Grigorovich, was allegedly escorting vessels from the Russian shadow fleet, which operates to evade Western sanctions. While British forces had intercepted a Russian tanker from this fleet in the Channel on June 14, the UK Ministry of Defense stated the firing incident was unrelated to that interception.
